CAPELLO´S CONUNDRUM

Our friends from http://www.futfanatico.com/ -a recommendable website about football with some articles in Enlgish and other in Spanish-sent us this article about the “new” English national team.
Thanks again Elliott.
Capello’s Conundrum

Two moments burn in the England fan’s mind like a stack of hot coals. First, Wayne Rooney trudging alone up front in Germany, growing frustrated as the technical Portuguese passed circles around Lampard, Gerrard, and Hargreaves. Eventually, Rooney would stomp Carvalho, see red, and England would lose in penalties.

Second, at home in Wembley, David Beckham and Peter Crouch enter as substitutes and soon combine for a goal. The euphoria is short-lived as Croatia respond with a stunning goal that would send the Three Lions on an extended summer break.

The quarterfinal exit stung like a bee sting in the spring: painful but passing. The failure to qualify for Euro 2008 induced a collective psychosis: root and branch analyses of the English game emerged. Was the problem not enough training grounds for five year olds? Perhaps England should cease importing stylish continental players?

Capello, a man of conviction and bravery, assumed the mast amidst a tempest of uncertainty. While the Italian has the ego to overpower any individual English player, and his ruthlessness is legendary, signs are emerging that his reign may reap results equal to his predecessors.

The Three Lions has 5 straights wins and a cushion over Croatia, but the lack of a striking option not named Rooney is troublesome. Michael Owen, if fit, would be the logical choice. However, the former talisman’s career has been more desert than oasis, and as of late his struggles to regain match fitness threaten to cast a dark shadow over a solid career.

The other options, Heskie, Crouch, and Defoe, lack international class. All of them have faults obvious to the amateur’s eye, let alone professional assistant scouts preparing a match report in a knock-out setting.

In the win over the Ukraine, Capello played Barry, Gerrard, and Lampard all at once. The midfield triangle, reminiscent of the Sven era, was slow and imprecise in the pass – a deadly combination against technical sides. John Terry headed home a setpiece to seal the game, but such scores, a dime a dozen in domestic leagues, will be hard to come by in South Africa.

Spain won the last European with a salivating frontline of Fernando Torres and David Villa. The Spaniards bombarded the flanks with Iniesta and Silva providing a handful. England, in Joe Cole and Theo Walcott, certainly has the widemen to create. But who will head home those crosses?

For the meantime, expect more of the slow, lumbering 3 man midfield. Gerrard and Lampard may not work well together, but they are both superior to the options up front. Until a genuine #9 emerges to steal once and for all Michael Owen’s shirt, the semifinals of a major tournament will remain a bridge too far.

THE RETURN OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUES (article in English and Español)

After the Champions and Uefa Cup´s games with the tremendous FC Barcelona´s spectacle –again the Pep Guardiola's team arrived to the half time of the game with a 4-0 in the score-, the national leagues return with easy games for the important and big teams and besides with the decisive and attractive Istanbul´s derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.
As we said, the teams, which are playing to be the National Champion in each league, have comfortable games and for example in Spain, FC Barcelona will receive Recreativo Huelva on Saturday at 20.00 CET-¿will be it another 4-0 at half time?- and Real Madrid will play against Real Valladolid on Sunday at 17:00 CET. The same circumstance will be in other championships, since Liverpool FC will receive Blackburn Rovers at Anfield Road on Saturday at 13.45 c.e.t, or Manchester United will play at Sunderland on Saturday at 16.00 c.e.t –, or Olympique Lyon will play against AS Monaco on Sunday at 18.45 c.e.t-it could be a great weekend for the Claude Puel's team because its rival, Olympique Marseille can have a complicated game after its Uefa Thursday´s game and besides other Lyon´s rivals, OSC Lille and PSG will have a direct duel-.

So, as these European championships do not have attractive games, I think that the attention will be at Istanbul with the decisive derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. It is a decisive game, because we can say that a defeat will mean to say goodbye to the Lig title-although the Turkish Süper Lig is “crazy” and anything is possible in any game- because after this weekend, the teams will play only 7 more games and the looser will have an important gap with the leaders of the championship Besiktas-yesterday it won 1-3 at Kocaelispor(Agbetu scored for Kocaelispor and Zapotocny, Bobo and Simsek for Besiktas) and Sivasspor. To this derby, the teams arrive at a different moment, because on the one hand, Galatasaray seems that it is accusing the injured of Servet Cetin and the departure of Fernando Meira to Zenit St. Petersburg and it is showing defensive problems during the last games and in fact it has won only 1 game in last 3 played –it drawn the game played against Trabzonspor(2-2), it beat Gaziantepspor (0-1) and it lost the game played at Ali Sami Yen against Eskisehirspor (0-1)-. On the other hand, Fenerbahçe is living a good time, especially if we refer to its level of play, since maybe we saw the best Fenerbahçe of the season during the last 2 games, showing seriousness, good mentality and order and the defeat at Bursa can be described as a mere accident, since the team played well and the only problem was its last minutes of the game when the players committed some defensive mistakes and besides it suffered an hesitant penalty in the last play of the game during a Yildirim´s play. Furthermore Luis Aragones has good news, since finally we are seeing the best Dani Güiza of the season and it seems that he has recovered his smell to score goals and in fact he scored in the last 2 games played with Fenerbahçe and besides he was decisive with his play in the game between Turkey and Spain. So, finally it seems that he is thinking in football and not in his “girls affaires” and he starts to assume the responsibility in the important moments as this Sunday´s game at Ali Sami Yen (at 18.00 c.e.t), where his team will need his best performance to supply the absence of the brilliant Brazilian star Alex, who has muscular problems and until the last minute his presence will be hesitant. Absences:
Galatasaray: Servet Cetin and Tobias Linderoth. Hesitant: Shabani Nonda
Fenerbahçe: Edu Dracena; hesitant: Alex
Finally, we will make our prediction of the Spanish League´s games, where the attention will be in the relegation´s zone, where we will see crucial game as the duel between Numancia and Espanyol Barcelona, which will try to win the game and to reduce the gap with Getafe, Recreativo de Huelva or Real Betis, which have complicated games. This is our prediction:
Saturday:
20.00 FC Barcelona-Recreativo Huelva 4-1
22.00 Villarreal CF-Malaga CF 3-1
Sunday at 17.00:
Racing Santander-Real Betis 1-1
Real Mallorca-Almeria 1-1
Real Madrid-Real Valladollid 3-0
Sporting Gijón-Valencia CF 1-2
Numancia-RCD Espanyol 1-2
Osasuna-Athletic Bilbao 2-1
Sunday at 19.00
Sevilla CF-Getafe 2-0
Sunday at 21.00
Deportivo Coruña-Atlético Madrid 2-2
Good luck!!

VUELVEN LAS LIGAS (article in English and Español)

Galatasaray: Servet Cetin, y Tobias Linderoth. Dudosos: Shabani Nonda
20.00 FC Barcelona-Recreativo Huelva 4-1
22.00 Villarreal CF-Malaga CF 3-1
Domingo a las 17.00:
Rácing Santander-Real Betis 1-1
Real Mallorca-Almería 1-1
Real Madrid-Real Valladollid 3-0
Spórting Gijón-Valencia CF1-2
Numancia-RCD Espanyol 1-2
Osasuna-Athlétic Bilbao 2-1
Domingo a las 19.00
Sevilla CF-Getafe 2-0
Domingo a las 21.00
Deportivo La Coruña-Atlético Madrid 2-2
Suerte!!

THE PROTAGONISTS OF THE QUARTERFINALS OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE(I) (article in English and Español)

Yesterday, the Champions League´s Quarterfinals started with good games and with the excellent play from some players.
On the one hand, in the match between Villarreal CF and Arsenal FC, we think that the most remarkable player was the Arsenal's Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who returned to show that when he is at 100%, he is one of the best forwards of the world and yesterday he was a constant nuisance for the defensive line of “the yellow submarine”, which had many troubles to stop the mobility, the ball controls behind the Villarreal´s defensive line back, the power and the quality from Adebayor, who finally had a reward and thanks to a Cesc Fábregas´s assist, he could score a very important and nice goal, which permits to Arsenal to play with some calmness the 2 leg at the Emirates Stadium next week.
On the other hand, on the other great Tuesday´s game between Manchester United and FC Porto, we want to remark the great play showed by the players of Jesualdo Ferreira, whose proposal for this game was excellent, since we could see a FC Porto´s players playing without fear, looking for the victory, and choking down to Manchester United and showing that this team can be European Champion again and that it was not coincidence that it finished in the first position of group(Arsenal, FC Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Fenerbahçe was the group)and that it was the fair winner in the first knockout round against Atlético Madrid. If we have to emphasize any players of this game, perhaps it was very remarkable the play of the Brazilian Fernando-yesterday the game was an exhibition of this Brazilian center midfielder, because he was always in the correct place, stopping the United´s game… it seemed that he had a magnet because the ball always ended up in his feet. This 21 year´s old midfielder is a player to follow, since although he has not a big experience-this is his first season at FC Porto (the Portuguese club paid 720,000 euros for him!),after a year on loan at Estrela Amadora-he is showing that he has a great future and that he is ready to play important games like Yesterday´s game. Alongside Fernando, we want to emphasize the play of Brazilian striker Hulk, which was again “The Incredible" Hulk since he was synonym during all the game of: mobility, quality and danger for the United´s defensive line, whose level is worse when Rio Ferdinand do not play and of course yesterday the play of Lisandro Lopez, Lucho Gonzalez, Cristian "El cebolla" Rodriguez and Hulk was a nightmare for them. About Manchester United, perhaps the best player during the Tuesday´s night was Wayne Rooney, who showed during the game his abilities: the intelligence-he was in the correct place to take advantage of the tremendous Bruno Alves´s mistake- and quality-it was excellent his assist to the decisive “Apache" Tevez during the United´s second goal-, showing that even when Cristiano Ronaldo does not have a good day-maybe the Portuguese star did not play well because he played in the center-, the Sir Alex Ferguson´s team is a very dangerous team and any player of the team can decide the game.
Anyway, there were and excellent game and we hope that today we can also enjoy with the FC Barcelona-Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC- Chelsea FC- at 20.45 c.e.t.
Cheers,

LOS PROTAGONISTAS DE LOS CUARTOS DE FINAL (I)(article in English and Español)

A disfrutar!!
Cheers,

TURKEY-SPAIN, THE WORLD CUP IS NEAR FOR SPAIN (article in English and Español)

Of course the news of the days was the tremendous Argentina´s defeat at Bolivia(6-1…I think Juan Román Riquelme is happy with this big Maradona´s defeat), but on this article we will pay attention to other interesting game played this Wednesday between Turkey and Spain, where we could see the mark of a champion team, Spain.
It is true that the Spanish team did not play its best game and if we exclude 15 minutes during the first half and different phases during the second half, when we saw good Spanish plays-good passes and combinations between the Spanish players-, “la roja” had many problems to counteract the Turkish play and specially since Semih Sentürk scored the first goal of the game-Marchena was sleeping during the Semih´s goal-, because from that moment, Spain came down a bit during some minutes. But the big teams and the teams with a winning mentality are those, whose maximum performance appears during the complicated games, with a very hostile environment such as this Ali Sami Yen´s game. And this is what Spain did yesterday, since the Spanish team started the match pretty well-especially after the minute 10- and it seemed that it had everything under control until a pass from Arda Turan-maybe he and Mehmet Aurelio were the best Turkish players in this game- to Tuncay Sanli arrived and the Middlesbrough´s forward “helped” by an asleep Carlos Marchena assisted to the Fenerbahçe´s striker Semih Sentürk, who was alone and scored the first goal of the game in the minute 26. Since this moment, we saw some minutes of an Spanish collapse-it was during the rest of the first half and during some minutes of the second half-until a Volkan Demirel´s mistake arrived-for the umpteenth we could see another mistake of this goalkeeper, who is not having his best season and of course (as we said in the last article)it was very normal to see a Volkan Demirel´s mistake during these 2 games against Spain-. The Demirel´s mistake was profited by Fernando Torres, since “El Niño” could force a penalty-his shot was stopped by the hand of the defender Ibrahim Üzülmez- and Xabi Alonso did not miss the penalty and equalized the game-minute 63-(by the way, Xabi Alonso did not have a good days, since he was very imprecise many times). From that moment we saw a very open game, because the Turkey had to win the game to continue with chances to play next World Cup and of course both team had clear options to score, since the Turkish team pushed the Spanish defensive line-Turkey was very close to score when Sentürk could not profit a great Gökhan Gönül´s pass- and Spain profited the important spaces in the Turkish defensive line and it has a great chance to score in a play between Piqué, Santi Cazorla-he received a great 30 metres´s pass from Gerard Piqué- and Fernando Torres and finally it scored the decisive goal when the controversial Dani Güiza took advantage of a great shot of Marchena and the slow Hakan Balta and he assisted to Albert Riera, who was alone and he could score the last goal of the game -at the end Turkey paid the 35 year´s old of the defender Emre Asik and Ibrahim Üzülmez-. The goal arrived in the minute 92 and of course it was decisive for see another Spanish win-it has won its last 11 games played and besides its last defeat was 31 games ago!!!- and now “la roja” is very close to South Africa, where we will see whether Turkey will play, because after this game it is quite complicated its qualify, although if the Fatih Terim´s men play like against Spain, they should have no problems in the other games, especially if we see players like the central defender Cetin and Zan and if players like Kazim-Kazim or Nihat have a better performance –the Villarreal´s striker has not scored any goals during this season-and if we see playing the brothers Altintop, Mehmet Topuz, Mehmet Topal or Ugur Boral and if the Fatih Terim´s decisions are better and we see experienced players in the important moments of the games- I do not understand how could play the decisive moments of this important games players like Batuhan Karadeniz (17 year´s old) and Nuri Sahin (20 year´s old), who are not used to assume this responsibility and to play these game ... anyway, this is Terim. After the Wednesday´s games-Bosnia beat Belgium2 (Dzeko)-1 (Swerst)- the group 5 is:
1-Spain, 18 points
2 Bosnia-Herzegovina, 12 points
3-Turkey, 8 points
4-Belgium, 7 points
5-Estonia, 5 points
6-Armenia, 1 point

ESPAÑA, PASO FIRME AL MUNDIAL (article in English and Español)

2-Bosnia Herzegovina, 12 puntos
3-Turquía, 8 puntos
4-Bélgica, 7 puntos
5-Estonia, 5 puntos
6-Armenia, 1 punto
