DAVIS CUP:SPAIN SAYS GOODBYE TO THE TITLE( This article is available in English and Español)

Last Monday the tennis number 1 of the world, the Spanish Rafael Nadal announced that he is injured and he will not play the Davis Cup´s final-it will be next 21 of November in Mar de la Plata, Argentina-, which is a very bad news both for tennis in general-is always nice to see the best players- and for Spain in particular, because honestly without Nadal the Spanish options to win the title are minimal-it will be a miracle if Spain win the competition-because if we look at both teams, we see a very strong Argentine team and instead to a Spanish team with many doubts-it was difficult even with the Nadal´s presence but now a victory is a dream-.

On the one hand, the Argentine team has a very strong team, led by Juan Martin del Potro and David Nabaldián.
Juan Martin del Potro is the Number 8 of the world this year and he is playing at a high level and since last July, when he won his first ATP tournament in Stuttgart-he beat Richard Gasquet in the final -, his progression in the game and in the Rank has been brilliant, because in two months he arrived since number 65 until the number 13 of the world thanks to victories in tournaments like Kitzbuhel (he beat Melzer in the final), Los Angeles (he beat Andy Roddick) and Washington (he beat Troicki in the final). So, he is a player who has” exploded” this year, showing all his incredible, finishing the year at the ATP Top 10-number 8- and playing the Masters Cup in Shanghai (yesterday he beat the competitive Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 7-6,7-6). So, he is an excellent moment and of course we think that it is virtually impossible that he can be surprised by the Spaniards in the Davis Cup Final and therefore it seems that Argentina will have his 2 points in the final.
We can say almost the same of David Nabaldián, which is a classic of the tennis in the last years, having a lot of experience and although this year he did not start very well, we can say that he arrives to Davis Cup final in an excellent moment, since their last 2 months he has competed very well with victory in the Stockholm´s tournament (October, the 6 he beat Robin Soderling in the final) and he reached the finals in Basel (the Oct. 20 he lost the final played against Roger Federer) and of the Paris´s Masters Series (on October, the 26 he lost the final played against Tsonga, and he arrived to this final thanks to beat Andy Murray, Nikolay Davidenko, Juan Martin del Potro and Nikolas Kiefer during the tournament). So, he is in a great moment and of course it has a consequence in the ATP ranking, since he is again knocking on the TOP 10´doors and he will finish the year as number 11 of the world and therefore the Spanish player will have many difficulties to win any match played against Nabaldián.

But Spain has not only the problem of the Argentine´s potential, but, as we said, the team without Nadal shows many doubts.
On the one hand, David Ferrer, who is the Spanish number 1 after the Nadal´s absence, has a big problem, since he is exhausted both physically and mentally and he needs a break to recover his best level and therefore he arrives to this final without any real option to be a competitive player, since if we review his result since last June-July (when he won the Hertongenbosch´s tournament and played the Bastad´s semi-final against Tommy Robredo), his results are very poor, with virtually no victories and without an important victory- except in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup against Andy Roddick-. So we see bad future to the Spanish team if it has to rely on the good play of David Ferrer, who will be sure again a top player next season after the winter break and it sure that we will see again David Ferrer in good positions of the ATP ranking-last February was top 4 of the world-, but he is not ready for this Davis Cup´s final.
But if David Ferrer shows many doubts, what can we say about the other members of the team. We think that they are not synonym of any guarantee, since they are not too reliable either the left-handed Fernando Verdasco (the number 16 of the ATP does not have too much experience in important game and since June-it was his best time of year- he has not achieved great results and he lost the games when he played against important players-in Paris and St. Petersburg with Andy Murray, in New Haven with Mardy Fish, in Madrid with Marin Cilic or in the U.S. Open with Andreev), or Feliciano Lopez (although it did a good October, since he arrived to the quarter-finals of the Madrid´s Masters Series and to the Basel´s semi-finals, certainly he is not a reliable player, since he is thinking more times about the models than his tennis´s play), or Marcel Granollers(the number 52 of the ATP´s inclusion in the Spanish team can be described as a surprise, since ok, he won the Houston´s tournament, beating James Blake in the final, but this game was on April!!! And if we review the rest of his season since this tournament, we see: 37 games played and 13 victories, so it is not a good record and if we see his rivals, we can see that he defeat important names like Marcos Bagdhatis-he is playing horrible and he finish the season as number 100! of the ATP- and Paul-Henri Mathieu-number 32 of the ATP- on October, but we also see that he could not win games played against players like Miguel Angel López Jae-rank 185! of the ATP and the game was played on September during Trnava´s tournament- or Jesse Huta Galung-rank 154 of the ATP and the game was played on august during the Segovia´tournament- or Jan Hernych-it was the last Granollers´game, this month during the Bratislava´s tournament-).The last member of the Spanish team is Santiago Ventura( current ATP rank: 122) and of course I can not understand his inclusion in the team, since his best result in all the season was when he beat the number 72 of the ATP, Sergio Roitman, during the Viña del Mar´s tournament in January and when he beat the number 89 of the ATP, Rainer Schuettler last may during the Casablanca´s tournament, so his inclusion seems a joke, specially if we see that he lost games played against the number 246 of the ATP-Lamine Ouahab-last September during the Tarragona´s tournament or against number 292 of the ATP-Marc Fornell-last September during the Seville´s tournament and specially if we see the list of the Spanish players in the ATP top-100, since we can find there: Ivan Navarro-number 75 of the ATP-, Oscar Hernández-number 70 of the ATP-, Guillermo García López-number 63 of the ATP-, Juan Carlos Ferrero-a former number 1 of the ATP and this season he finishes as number 55 of the ATP-, Albert Montañés-number 46 of the ATP-, Carlos Moya-a former number 1 of the ATP and I think we should be in the Final, because he has a lot of experience, level, quality and he is playing well during the last months(he finishes the season as number 42 of the ATP), Tommy Robredo-he is the number 21 of the ATP and of course he should be in the team, but he declines to be in the squad, alleging that he is tired, although I think that there is another reason, his bad relation with the Spanish captain, Emilio Sanchez Vicario, since Robredo was angry with his exclusion of the team when Spain played the semi-final of the Davis Cup against USA) and Nicolas Almagro-number 19 of the ATP-. So, it is incredible the inclusion of both Granollers and Ventura and of course we will only see a result, an Argentine victory, since as I said before, other result can be described as a miracle.
We will have the answer on the 21 of November.
Cheers,
J&F
